Just wondering if anyone else is on the open beta of planetside up in here. I like this game personnally, it's very much like tribes but with huge maps. imho it's not worth paying money to play. At this stage of the Beta is requires >512mb of ram to play well. Of course, you can be sure the final product will perform better with less ram but we'll see.

Don't be too excited. You have 256mb of ram, and like myself, you will lag like a retard on a 28.8kbps modem trying to play bf1942 while downloading episode 2 on kazaa. Really, it's that bad.

Exactly, that's how it feels when the lag is that bad.

Well, from my own experience and what I've read on the planetside beta forums, the worst problem is if you have 256mb of ram or less. If you have 512 or better and can get <200 ping, you'll be fine. I have some ddr in the mail so I'll know how well it does with a gig in the machine pretty soon. Again, the final won't have these insane ram requirements but with all the ppl in an area at one time, huge environments, etc, this is a game that likes ram and lots of it.

As far as i know having a small amount of RAM can't give you lag. But it can cause HD Swaping which will drop your frame rate like crazy because it has to load stuff off the HD while playing. I'm not sure if you are trying to say it does though.....I'm tired.....Brain hurts....

Bingo you got it. It doesn't directly cause lag but does it in a more round about sort of way. Since the term lag means to stay behind, and does not literally have anything to do with ping, I use it in this circumstance.

Planetside Exclusive beta tester here.
As far as the memory requirements go, there was (and still is I believe) a few memory leak issues that cause systems with under 512MB of RAM to be unstable/crash happy.
My moderate system specs are:
ASUS A7V333 motherboard
-AMD XP 2100+ CPU
-VIA KT333 chipset
-onboard C-Media 8738 audio
768MB DDR RAM – crucial PC2100
GeForce2 TI 64mb DDR - detonator 43.45
Win2k Pro - up to date on service packs
DirectX - 9.0a
Running the game at 1024x768 on even my old GeForce2 I have never noticed any FPS loss.
Now the lag caused by the increase in population when the open beta testers started logging in is a completely different issue, that is a server issue.

I am playing the beta and think its a slap in the face to all the other massive multiplayer games. I think it rules.

As far as I know there is no built in utility to monitor your FPS or LAG. If hope they plan to implement both, I just do not think they have yet.
