Don't know much about the Intel side, but I love my Nforce2 + Athlon XP + DDR PC2700. ~ $300 total (1800+, 512MB) from Newegg.com.

yah i was thinking of that combination as well, but am wondering if u went with amd do you nid additional cooling, cuz i think their chips overheat pretty quickly, we're not considering overclocking here

Not at all if you get the Athlon XP. They're very cool. You can even overclock them by about 100MHz without additional cooling. Definitely browse through the Futuremark forums to find out what they can do.

I know the P4's are equally overclockable. I don't think you can go wrong either way, although the Athlons may still offer better prices for equivalent performance.

EDIT: oops, I missed your comment that you're not considering overclocking. Anyway, Athlon XP has no heat problems. Don't think you don't have to put a heat sink on it, though. That goes for every CPU you buy today.

Don't forget to pay a visit to www.arstechnica.com, where you can find tons of information if you are buying parts to build your own machine! I was looking for a quiet yet powerful power supply (Oxymoron...?) and this is the only site where I found some useful tips.

Some AMD's chip gets hot easily... so make sure you stick to Athlon XP. Don't even bother to look at any P4 shit. They are way overpriced.

Hey Yian, I was recently looking for quiet PC components too, and found the following two sites helpful:

That kingmax memory sux ass dude, dont get it. it dont overclock well at all and uses new bga style memory but its really not that good yet, needs to be optimized, even though all it is , is a new style of saudering. anyways, dont get kingmax, get corsair or geil, both good kinds of memory!

Well, maybe there's something wrong with my system, but I haven't seen that much of a gain as far as memory timeings go. Not enough to make up for the insane price.

the cl2.5 stuff will run at cl2 easily anyway

nahh not if its cl2.5 rated, especially if u get that samsung pc2700 thats just an overclock from the 2100 or 2400 chips... like kingmax and crucial wont be stable at cl2 setting,

sushi128
April 24th, 2003, 10:22 PM
i've got a kingmax stick. it's cl2.5, and runs at cl2. the thing is, i always assume that a chip can overclock just a little. i've only had crucial once, and it was a cl2 stick, so i don't really have anything to say about that.

the kingmax stick is just sittin here ATM.....have some Geil that goes a lot further :D

Guess what I got when I bought my video card from Hercules? Morrowind!!! It is good to get a new video card and being able to test it's perofrmance with a demanding game that come with it. Nice-looking water!

yeah water in morrowind is cool.. btw zanda didnt notice ur system.. haha.. that was really stupid.. ok.. i admit.. anyways.. hercules new card simply rocks joes ass.. man its way too cool.. i like copper.. i am going to get a copper heatsink custom built by a person here in pakistan but in a month or two for my radeon 9700 pro.. i am thinking all copper just like the one that comes with ATi.. should be a good thing if the person can make it.. really would love a copper sink just like ATi puts it on their cards.. but for now its only wishful thinking!

abt the copper sink.. I said i am thinking abt a custom built copper heatsink.. the way ATi has it.. ok wrong statement but i meant that ATi has a nice plastic heatsink with fins on it and a nice fan.. i am thinking if i can get someone to make the same thing but all copper this time around.. wouldnt that be cool.. the design is perfect for a copper cooler.. just a thought though.. i gotta find me a nice workman.. for it.. will do so when i have time..
