PS3 Games Not Necessarily $59.99 (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3151823)

People were understandably upset when companies decided next-generation meant charging everyone $10 more for their games -- especially when the price was applied to last-generation ports like GUN and Tony Hawk's American Wasteland. Nonetheless, most have sucked it up at this point, but no one anticipated Sony would actually up the ante when PlayStation 3 dropped in November.

Yet SCEA president Kaz Hirai isn't promising a $59.99 price tag for PS3 games this fall. In an interview with PSM, the Sony leader explained. So, what I can say now is, I think it would be a bit of a stretch to think that we could suddenly turn around and say "PS3 games now $99.99" I don't think the consumers expect the software pricing to suddenly be double," he told the magazine. "So, if it becomes a bit higher than fifty-nine bucks don't ding me, but, again, as I said, I don't expect it to be a hundred bucks."

In other words, consumers should expect PS3 games to cost somewhere between $59.99 and $99.99. He doesn't expect them to be a hundred dollars, but it's only a "stretch" to expect it. Have we moved back to the cartridge ages here? Wasn't disc-based media supposed to make everything cheaper? I don't want to remember how much my parent's paid for several of Square's older SNES releases during Christmas.

Sony's cocky enough to price their hardware above the competition, but we don't seriously expect them to change consumer expectations for software prices. We hope.

I already posted this on the front page but I know meny people dont even read the front page.

I'm betting many games will be at $60 but so will many be at $65. $70 would be probably be the absolute highest and would probably be charged only for PS3 exclusive AAA budget heavily hyped/marketed games.

I've seen xbox360 games in the shops for $120 Aus. Thats around $80 US.

Ripped off? Methinks. If sony follows this path, on top of their hefty console price, they may have trouble selling anything.

Answer = modchip + pirate.

Or you can go the answer=PC+Bittorent route. Either way is just fine.

There is no way Sony is going to charge a single game for almost a hundred dollars. They can't be that stupid.

That last statement needn't ever be added, for it always baits the obvious reply.

Nevertheless, let's hope for their sake that games are no more than any Xbox 360 titles.

"Steel Battalion"

Granted, it was a rather huge exception, but just so you know that games can cost a shitload of money...

Heh, I own that. I'm planning on building a cabinet with it in it.

Should be cool if I ever get off my ass and do it; love that game.

Well, that game came with a huge controller, so it IS really an exception.

Always wanted Steel Battalion. I thought it would've dropped in price quicker than the Sega 32x. I thought wrong.

Sony is just diggin themselves deeper and deeper.
I remember when Zelda: The Adventures of Link came out for the NES and my mother took me to the video rental joint to grab it up and they were asking for a $100 deposit just to rent the damn thing. I realise this has little to do with this topic other than the $100 pricing and how rediculous that sounds when it's associated with a single game.

Hey, at least PC Gaming isn't going to go up for anothe month at least. I'm happy.

Why the fuck are 360 and PS3 games so expensive anyway? Licensing or something?

Yeah, they are just trying to push it and see how far the gamers are willing to pay for it. They probably figured that a brand new movie DVD cost you like $30 dollars and only has enough material to keep you entertained for 4 hours max (movie + bonus materials), so if a game that can keep you happy for 8, 10, or even 15 hours or so, should cost three times as much or they don't think they have milked the product enough. :D
