Irish energy miracle 'a joke'
AUSTRALIAN scientists have scoffed at claims by an Irish company that it has developed technology that can create free, clean and constant energy.
The Dublin-based Steorn put an advertisement in the Economist magazine this week announcing that it had discovered energy's holy grail, based on the interaction of magnetic fields.
"Oh, goodness, what can I say?" said Martin Sevior, associate professor at Melbourne University's School of Physics. "It violates a very fundamental principle of physics, and flies in the face of 2000-years-plus of physics. It's an incredibly big claim."
One of the basic principles of physics is that energy can neither be created nor destroyed, it can only change form.
The ad issued a challenge for 12 physicists to rigorously test the technology so it could be developed. Professor Sevior said he was willing to test the technology, but would look for "what's hidden behind the curtains".
But Steorn's chief executive, Sean McCarthy, insisted that scientists had already examined the technology and had said off the record that it worked.
"What we have developed is a way to construct magnetic fields so that when you travel round the magnetic fields, starting and stopping at the same position, you have gained energy," he told Ireland's RTE radio.
"The energy isn't being converted from any other source such as the energy within the magnet. It's literally created. Once the technology operates, it provides a constant stream of clean energy."
Barry Williams, of the Australian Skeptics, said he did not believe it. "They are not the first company to claim they have suddenly discovered the miraculous property of magnetism that allows you to get free energy."
So what if it sounds like total bogus? So what if it goes against 500,000 years of physics? My advice to these guys in australia is to shut up, look at what the company has supposedly created in detail, and then dismiss it, if it doesn't check out.
This attitude is disgusting, unscientific. I's almost as if these scientists are following some sort of religion. It is ok to question, but not to dismiss something before you've actually even seen how it works...

Fuck you and your idiotic nature.

The article does seem a bit pointless. Instead of investigating the claim and checking it out, they just run a piece on how the Aussie scientists think it's absurd. If that's not nationalist journalism, I don't know what is.

Scientists flock to test 'free energy' discovery ^^^
Now that's better. Scientists doing what they do best, test it then say its total bullshit, if it happens to be bullshit.
Yes, and if I claim I can defy gravity you'll believe me until you see otherwise?

No of course I won't 'believe' you. I won't try to insult your claim beforehand either, which is what these guys in australia were doing. There is a middle ground, a passive stance, an intermediate stage before agreeing and disagreeing. This is where any serious scientist should be at whenever something new and unobserved, yet worthy of observance, comes along.
And whats with you? Having a bad day? Or are you just plain old abusive?

well, let me be the paranoid one to ask these questions... how much would fuel/energy companies pay to shut them the hell up? How much would energy/fuel companies start to lose if we suddenly discovered a Free source of energy? id say a poopload.

Chances are such companies would buy these guys out, then sell us the 'free' energy, which of course costs nothing for them to produce. I think these fellas, if not outright liars and con-artists (in which case they should be burned alive along with their families), or if not mistaken in some aspect of their new tech, have realised that the academic world is a piece of shit environment to bring forth radical new discoveries.
Academics are very resistant to change, think about what happened with the whole aether fiasco back in the 19th century, it took two stubborn guys (micelson and morley) to get them to listen and for these guys to go through the 'proper' channels with their technology (if it is genuine) would take them at least 8-10 years of bumming around listening to prominent scientists chucking hissy fits as they frolick around the machine, trying to disprove that it is actually producing excess usable energy from seemingly nothing.
Although might I suggest at this point that there is no reason for the 1st fundamental law of thermodynamics to be broken in this scenario, maybe the device is drawing energy from some other unknown force in the universe?
As I said form the start, lets keep an open mind, and test this thing.

Actualy in most cases like this, a company that would be put out of buisness by such a new technology, buy out the rights to the technology, and legaly mae those who made it never able to reproduce such an item, they then put this new bit of information in a box on a shelf, where it nevers see's the light of day again.
Much like when Bridgestone tyre's bought the right to a new tyre design that would never go flat/pop/be slashed.

To three shall thou count. Not two, for it be too little. Four is too much. Five, way off.
/Or something like that
Edit: this thread is fucking dumb, btw. A while ago, a cult based in Montreal (the Raeliens) claimed to have cloned a human. No one took them seriously. And they were right not to.

Then did he raise on high the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch, saying, "Bless this, O Lord, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy." And the people did rejoice and did feast upon the lambs and toads and tree-sloths and fruit-bats and orangutans and breakfast cereals ... Now did the Lord say, "First thou pullest the Holy Pin. Then thou must count to three. Three shall be the number of the counting and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither shalt thou count two, excepting that thou then proceedeth to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the number of the counting, be reached, then lobbest thou the Holy Hand Grenade in the direction of thine foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it.

Well, Realians wanted publicity and they got it with junk news.
Koreans work on cloning in silence and admit to have cloned only dogs so far. (But c'mon, what's the purpose of cloning dogs? Human is going to be cloned not doubt)
Irish scientistists wanted publicity, too, for sure. I imagine their observation is an important one, not ground-breaking though. I mean you have to have magnetic field and you have to move around magnetic field. So there is actually an input of energy into equation, it's not like they have created energy out of nothing, for Holy Hand Grenade's sake...

qft.
Perpetual motion does not and cannot exist.
It would require a 0 friction enviroment which can not ever exist. Scients have common sesne. It's not some conspiracy.
If it sounds too good to be true, it is too good to be true.
If you believe this infinite free energy is true, I have some psychic hotlines, cure-alls, gasoline mpg increasing pills, tornado devices and get rich quick schemes to sell you.

The critical difference being that then idiots laughed at scientists, and now scientists laugh at idiots.

Your looking at it from a once off perspective. What you may not realize is theres someone claiming this shit every couple of weeks. This argument doesn't mean scientists should dismiss new things just because there are lots of cranks out there but rather it shows there needs to be a higher level of proof and evidence before it can be taken seriously.
Scientists generally think free energy isn't something that can happen, but they don't 'dismiss' the idea out of hand (this is a generalization, scientists form extremes at both ends just like any other people).
From the already quite lofty amount of evidence from experiments already done it seems quite unlikely. Anyone who claims to have invented a free energy machine needs to rule out the more obvious first. For example a subtle source of energy from outside i.e. simply doing your maths or measurements wrong, atmospheric effects, drawing power from the magnetic field itself (which weakens it over time) and many others.
As an aside, from memory the original post for this thread has been debunked.
Also, I love beating dead horses! :)
