View Full Version : A scary night with my video card...

It happened just three minutes ago before this post was made...
I was thinking about overclocking my video card. A 3D Prophet 9700 pro. According to PC Gamer, it can go as high as 372 core speed. I was like "why not?" So I started to look for overclocking utilities for this card.
I found a piece of shit in Hercules' website. Seemed all reasonable since Hercules made the card, after all. I downloaded and installed.
The windows locked up at the start menu. It didnt move. Not even the pointer.
I started the thing from the Last Known Configuration... it went into the windows, and told me that the "driver initiation" failed. My old driver, Catalyst 3.2, was wiped clean and the ATI control panel, was gone. I was like "oh...oh..."
Thought about reinstall all of them back and un-install this Hercules "3D Tweaker" was a must, but I restored the system instead, It was much quicker that way. Obviously the 3D Tweaker only workd with Catalyst 2.8.... WTF...
Gee, I almost screwed my rig again. What a scary night.

I'm not sure if it supports the newest ATi drivers, but a new version should come out soon. RivaTuner is also very usefull for other things besides overclocking.

yeah rivatuner will do just fine.. very easy to overclock ur cards and is compatible with all versions of ati drivers..

Gee, why I haven't thught of that! I used to overclock my clock with Radeonator, but the shit can't work anymore after I upgraded my Catalyst driver to 3.2. Thanks guys!:D :D I shall try RivaTuner soon!:D :D

rivatuner doesn't support cat 3.2's (as far as i know). rage3d tweak is good for all the stuff other than overclocking.

I'm not sure if it does either, but a new version should be coming out soon. I'm sure it will suport the newest ATi drivers.

powerstrip is the best overall overclocker, its universal, works with mostly all cards and driver versions, try it out very nice!

I have had similar experiences O/C CPUs. But with a card that powerful you really shouldn't need to OC. Some games don't really like OCed hardware for some reason (Battlfield 1942).

Yeah.... I was thinking about the same thing.... but it is just tempting to see how close my 9700 based card can get so close tp 400 at its core speed... almost the clock of 9800...:D :D Too risky. Nah I never overclock before and I won't try again.

Wuss! :D J/k, I guess if my first experience was like that I'd be wary as well. I remember the first time my PC didn't even post 'cause I pushed the fsb too far (the ram i currently use is 2100, sucky pc2100 at that). Scared the bejesus out of me. oh well, that's why they have a switch that resets the bios.

rivatuner can overclock anything just fine. but it doesn't support the driver features of the card. i don't remember being able to emulate NV30 openGL or being able to adjust the LOD bias in powerstrip :)
besides, it's shareware :rolleyes:

Check out the SWEET ASS OVERCLOCK.. whew who needs a 9800 pro.. damn! but i think that was only for testing purposes.. and my 3dmark score is looking nice too.. yeah baby!
