Hell I love Cliffy B so he will get my 60 bucks regardless. Also those 4 clips from the site there give some really great backstory to the world of GoW. If the game is anything like that it looks awesome, especially the clip they show of the Sattelite Beam Weaponry being used against the enemy.

People are already going to buy the game. The best the demo could do is disuade the impulse buyers.
The demo can come later for those who are still on the fence, and need some incentive.

This place is such a fucking downer. Insult eachother, sure, but stop undercutting everything in existence.
My God, I'm surprised you haven't killed yourself yet.
Nevertheless, I have good reason to think this game won't suck. First and foremost, people have have played the multiplayer have had nearly nothing bad to say about it. Alongside that, after watching videos of the multiplayer in action, I'm in agreement with those sentiments. The game just feels right. It also sppears to be a fucking riot. I was thrilled just watching. Imagine if I was actually playing! The gorealicious kills are so enticing and the cover-based gameplay is very intuitive and fresh. No game has implimented cover in such a seemless way; It's not just pretty graphics. That, and it's also going to be the first solid Xbox Live experience. We have no reasonable Xbox Live games outside of GRAW, and that's lackluster for the arcade-style lovers like myself. And, finally, there is of course the shallow element that the game just looks spectacular. The Xbox 360 has yet to have a showcase title, and this game fills the slot. It's a must have for anyone with the system, if only a way to present the power of a nextgeneration console.
So yeah, fuck off.
Though, of course, I could aways be wrong, heh.

Unlike you, I don't centre my concerns and anxieties around the production of a stupid xbox game and it's so-called awesome graphics and realism. I couldn't care less about it's multiplayer. If I want to look at something detailed, I step outside. If I want to interact with people, I step outside. If I want to see water affects, I'll go to the fucking beach.
Not that I'd expect any more from someone who pays a shitload for a TV, a computer and an X360 for his college dorm. What else have you to do on those sober and lonely friday nights?
You know what is a good game? Something that isn't the same shit I've seen a thousand times. Something that is less about the stupid technology and more about quality. "Gears of War. Shoot bugs with a squad by your side." Why the hell would I want to do that? Black has "shoot people in the face with a squad by your side." Prey has "Shoot aliens while you walk on the cieling and jump through portals in a giant dirty acid-trip." Splinter Cell has "who the fuck needs a squad? you're a hi-tech ninja!"
You want something to look forward to? Assassin's Creed. That's something I'd consider buying a new console for. And it's even got the Prince of Persia/Splinter Cell pedigree to back up the funky trailer.

But that's not even your point, really. Your point was lost in that vain attempt at making me cry because you have the oh-so misplaced assumption that I never do anything but sit here and play games. Your condescension lacks foundation. Your attempts at judging me are poor at best. Your constant pleas for me to kill myself make you sound pathetic, and only show just how much of a bitch you are. Only the weak beg for the death of others who they can't best themselves.

Gamespot's latest short video of the game looks interesting. I think what will make or break this game is the level design. The formula of cover-centric action with intelligent squad mates is promising, but it's gaming heaven if the level design kicks ass. With Epic Games behind this it's very likely that that will be the case. Still, I stand by my original statement. Demo or it sucks.

And you'll have your demo, but not for a long while.
The Cliffy B interview I mentioned before is on this (http://www.gametrailers.com/gamepage.php?id=1650) page, by the way.
And as for the tangent of this thread:
1) The self-loathing thing was actually a coincidence. I blame my subconscious.
2) The "you're an ass because you're a moderator" thing is old and long since disproven. I was always a dick, even before this, and I never claim it as a reason that I am better than anyone. I just am.
3) I have more than one place than my house in Lousiana, so the analogy works. I come back because this place used to kick ass, not because I think I alone can change it. Though, your comments sure works well with the logic that I'm an arrogant dick, so let's go that route!
Anyway, back to Gears of War. It's going to fucking rule.

it's not a big deal. it's just natural progression. Halo used to be the big thing. It had the amazing graphics, the amazing gameplay, the best multiplayer, but now it's old news.
In short, there's nothing new under the sun. The old saying goes, "Good artists borrow, great artists steal." Everybody's just using an idea that somebody else had, and making improvements on it, and putting their own personal touch on it.
I think it's really interesting to see how new technology constantly gets better at mimicking reality. Considering how a mere 34 years ago we were playing pong, and marveling at that, the distance we've come is amazing.
Gears of War looks really cool. The hype is of course manufactured, as it always is when something is supposed to be so totally amazing, but at the same time, a game like this is providing the building blocks upon which the next game comes out that knocks the socks off of Gears of War. We'll all be pumped on the next one, and it'll make Gears look like junk.
What about Wolfenstein? It was completely lateral, by no means open-ended as far as gameplay was concerned, and reused the same idea for 6 (or more, I can't remember) episodes, but at the time, it was amazing and all the kids were playing it. Then Doom came out, and improved on Wolf, the Doom clones, and then Quake, and so on and so forth.
It's just natural progression. The driving desire we have to improve on what was done in the past. No point in getting upset over it, just have fun with it and dream about what'll come next!

Gears of War is hardly a new rendition of an old idea. Halo is, though.

Have you played a tactical shooter? Ever? Because that's what they're about. Teamwork and cover. Making it more arcadey and adding co-op isn't a new idea, it's just their own "personal touch", quoting timmah.
Digital Limit
October 14th, 2006, 01:30 PM
I've never seen an arcadey tactical shooter, though. They're always trying to be hyperrealistic.
The seems 'new', not an improved tactical shooter.
tisl
October 14th, 2006, 02:20 PM
I say "tactical shooter" because of its heavy emphasis on cover and teammates. I don't see how making the gameplay faster and more action packed is "new". I also don't see a meaningful difference in core gameplay between GRAW and GoW. GoW is faster and more cinematic, but that's about it (excluding the differences between squad control and the support available).
This is a silly argument, though. I'm looking forward to playing this game when I get a 360 even if it's not innovative, thanks to timmah's insightful rambling.

New impressions:
GAF Member (denogginizerOS)
I got to play MP last night at the big bash MS held in Chapel Hill, NC. To use this analogy, Gears to a lot of you will be like the present you didn't think you were getting on Christmas morning after all the presents were opened, and then your parents told you to look behind the tree and there it was.
3 things I took away from the event last night:
1. MS knows how to promote a game. There was an open bar, multiple kiosks, a great live band, and pretty much most of the guys from Epic were there. They handed out custom T-shirts with the Gears logo on the front, and then you could put your gamertag on the back. Plenty of free food as well. One nice touch was every table had a bucket with Rolo's in it surrounded by shell casings. All in all, a great party.
2. The Epic team is one hell of a group of individuals. Every one of them clearly was very proud of what they accomplished. They were all very professional, a blast to talk to, and their passion for Gears came off as a bit humble because standing there watching Gears be played was proof enough that this game definitely deserves the 10's it will be getting in print. (That's right - 10's).
3. Gears of War is definitely the start of Next-Gen. You can say what you want about system wars and framerate and etc etc. But Gears of War is hands down the best looking game I have ever seen, and the feeling I got playing it AND watching it was that it will do to LAN parties what Halo did to LAN partiess. Every guy from Epic I spoke to told me, "Wait til you see Co-OP!" But standing there all night, looking around the room, you could not help smile when you heard cheers and laughter from all around the room as headshots were executed, chainsaws were brandished, or a laser airstrike was called in. I can HONESTLY say, all fanboyism aside, that I don't think I saw a single match play the same way as a previous match was played (4 hours!). I will post all of my gameplay impressions after I finish my breakfast, Ask me questions. I'll answer them the best I can.
more to come..
The guns feel very unique. Very powerful. Now, it is a bit impossible to fully comment on this because it was so damn loud in there, you caouldn't hear teh game well at all. But here are the things I found out about guns.
1. They all have a very unique feel to them. The chainsaw gun is the workhorse. The sniper rifle is everything you have seen (and is great to watch in action when someone gets a flanking or rear position). There was a gun that calls in what appears to be a laser strike that is analogous to a miniature artillery strike. The shottie will dismember and display your opponent on the wall behind him. And there was a crossbow weapon that I saw that I swear shoots a projectile that when it hits you target, there is a delay, an then an explosion. I am not 100% certain on this. THe pistol feels much like the pistol you get with great games like GRAW.
2. Reloading and handling them is second nature. X to reload, D-Pad to change from weapon to weapon, B to buzzsaw, and A to start the CNN-cam and to hit up against the walles. Very visceral. The L trigger brings you into zoom mode. There is a kickback effect, and when you start unleashing hell on an opponent as suppressing fire while your buddy flanks and drops a little grenage action in there, it is gaming bliss.
3. I really like the grenade animation. You swing the grenade around like a ball and chain and toss it when ready. Great animation.
Here is the feel of rushing on covers. It definitely will not get stale. There are moments in every match where an individual can turn the tide if they are savy enough. You get that sense of opportunity that comes in great multiplayer games where you know that the result of your actions may be a humiliating head shot, or a glorious success that your friends will cheer. The roars you heard in the room all through the evening were a clear indication to me that this game will not get stale. Again, I cannot emphasize this enough. This game will have the effect Halo had on LAN parties, and it will be similar to the effect Halo 2 had on Live.
Here is a nice little feature about the cover system. Remember in Pandora Tomorrow where Sam could move smoothly from one side of a door to the other in a single maneuver. In Gears, if you want to dive from one area of cover to another, it can be done in one well animated ,non-jarring movement. I spoke to the lead on animation about that and he said it took them a lot of effort to pull that off. But is great to see your character dive for cover, smack up against the wall, and grimace.
And by the way, one of the guys from Epic said the netcode was truly top-notch. He told me the net code for Gears is some of the best netcode if not the best he has ever seen. I told him that I loved being able to play PDZ with people on the west coast (wassup Che) and people overseas (wassup Prine). He said Gears was better than PDZ's netcode and one should expect similar if not better results.
With regards to the laser strike, it is a single beam that comes down. Very similar to the laser strike from Dawn of War but on a micro scale.
Here is a really cool feature. When you are incapacitated and vulnerable to curbstomping or being "finished", you have to tap the A button to keep your heart beating until a friend comes over and heals you by simply hitting X. So, as you lie there, struggling to hang on for life as the camera fades upwards, you are left tapping A hoping your buddy will come to save you, all the while knowing your enemy is apporaching to finish you off. This mechanic will yield moments in the game where you will see a buddy fall and you will know that unless you hold off the enemy that has just knocked him down, he will die. It creates a sense of urgency and tension that will be felt by victim, teammate, and enemy.
I spoke to the head of Cinematics who has twelve years of experience in movies and TV shows. He came over late from the Midway Stranglehold team. The only areas of framerate slowdown that have been mentioned in previews was in these cinematics. Not having seen this, I cannot comment. But speaking to the head of cinematics, I can attest that he was very pumped about working with the Unreal 3 engine and he said he was able to capture the emotion and achieve what he wanted. This was a theme throughout the night. You didn't hear these guys talking about giving up goals. They achieved them. And they had the proof right there in front of you.
Towards the end of the night, there was what I would term a Reservoir Dogs moment. But instead of pistols, 4 players were engaged in a ballet of chainsaw mayhem, each turning to the other. All I saw was blood spraying followed by one emerging victor, followed by a roar in the room. You hold down B, hope for the best, and proudly walk away when you see your opponent fall to the ground in chunks. Bloody, delicious fun.
And for those who wanted to know, I asked Cliffy about headshots. When you are standing next to someone when their noggin explodes, you hear the pop and the splatter of brains, bone, and blood.
I did not try any other melees. When you first get Gears, you will be faced with a control scheme that is not difficult to handle. You will find a few weapons you like, and you will tinker. Annd then more will expose itself, and you may find a new favorite. I did not get to sticky someone. I didn't hit someone with a pistol. But you can do this. And the prospect of tinkering with this come November 7th is enough to get me to count down the days until then like a child waits for Xmas.

Heh I wouldn't go as far as that since its obvious to me details like self-shadows are sharper in the promo than they in the actual game, not to mention the textures themselves looked to have been cleaned up by post-processing effects...at the very least I'm certain the promo ad uses in-game assets (Marcus's thumb indicates low polygon count)
But whether or not the promo ran in realtime is the least of my worries since the game already looks so goddamn great as it is in person...attended the same X06 Singapore Mr duckroll here went to and after having actually played through the multiplayer and campaign modes, Gears turned out to be so much better than I had already anticipated..
The event opened a day early on Friday night to registered members of the local xbox community and I gotta tell ya, despite the damn ****in faulty ventilation that basically turned the X06 tent into a glorified sauna, I still had blast playing team deathmatches with other attendees....hell, not even a live Blue Dragon presentation (showed off the first level of the game where your character, sans his blue dragon, had to fight off this "land shark") could pull my attention away as I stood there partially engrossed at people playing Gears nearby.
The gameplay mechanics were as I expected: easy to get used to. Maybe its cos I've played GRAW extensively but that doesn't mean both titles are similar. The cover system for instance is more intuitive than others may have you believe; i don't get those complaints of the "A" button being too context sensitive since I came away from the event thinking that if players are not gonna take cover, why the hell bother with that button in the first place. But if and when you needed to hide from enemy fire, that button serves its purpose damn well. Its different (read: by no means superior) than in R6 Vegas where you need to hold down Left Trigger to take cover, since in Gears you tap A and he'll dive into the intended pillar, car, etc and remain hidden...popping out to return fire is done by pressing and holding LT...using the chainsaw's done by pressing down the A button which meant ur right thumb won't be "mouselooking"/controlling the reticule so slicing ppl up in half took some getting used to for me...
also took me only one try before I got Active Reloading down pat (and by that I mean perfect reloads)...can't reiterate enough how fun the deathmatches were, despite each round being quick...it was interesting to see how team dynamics play out differently each round since everyone wasn't sticking with the same route and naturally chose different areas to cover...and to think that this was everybody's first time laying their hands on the game.
Had a great deal of playtime in co-op mode (splitscreen) as well....amazingly enough, there was nary a drop in fps and all visual details looked intact. It was such a satisfying experience reviving each other in the few times we were down-but-not-out and the locusts were smart enough to split their assault and take us out with coordinated teamwork.
Returned back to the event yesterday during its public opening and had some quality singleplayer session with Gears. Took my time through the campaign to drool over the insanely detailed textures, lighting...the works. Parts of a stone pillar that looked metallic shined as it should. Plumes from smoke grenades felt volumetic and didn't have visible layers as you walk right through it. Characters's soft self-shadowing are nothing short of technically amazing. Dirt kicks up nicely when you shoot at concrete. Was so awesome to see my AI teammate, Dom, actually creeping up behind a Locust and chainsawing it off in the distance. I went only as far as the first point where Marcus and Dom had to take separate paths before I had leave and meet up with a friend. But up until then it was pure graphical and adrenaline bliss.

When I played at the Cemetary event in campaign mode there was a moment where I ran out of ammo with both my machine guns and resorted to my pistol. An enemy was storming my position so I stood up, aimed my best and blew. his. entire. head. off. in one shot. It EXPLODED and his body crumpled. One of the most satisfying gaming experiences I can ever remember.
Another time I blew an enemies knees out from under him, as he fell he smacked his head on a piece of cover and then bounced to the ground, looked at me and I filled his chest with lead before he could move. Pure adrenaline and testosterone. Thank you Epic!!!
And again, NO ONE has seen anything past the first level. I think there are gonna be some crazy ass boss battles later. I was chatting with some of the project leads, telling them how impressed I was and they all just laughed at me.. "dude you havent seen ANYTHING yet, the first level is NOTHING".
I have to admit they might be telling the truth. 11/08 can't come soon enough....
Must-buy, eh?
I'd say so.

GoW's MP looks incredibly fun. If it wasn't for 360's bursting into flames one month after purchase I'd consider getting a 360 instead of building a new gaming rig. Other than GoW there's a fairly large amount of 360 games that interest me, both released an unreleased.

Anyway they said check back around 8 am in the morning as that's when they put the new release games out and the manager of that department must be there when they do it too. It was a different story than what I was hearing from other stores which was that it hadn't come in on freight yet.

http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/12280/Picture-Confirms-PC-Version-of-Gears-of-War/
The latest issue of PC Gamer could offer the most vivid proof that Microsoft Game Studios and Epic plan to bring Gears of War to the Windows platform sooner than expected.
In page 28 of the holiday issue of PC Gamer a picture of a “Games for Windows” sales stand clearly show three Gears of War along with Age of Empires III, Flight Simulator X, Zoo Tycoon 2 and the Windows Vista editions of Shadowrun and Halo 2.
We don’t think PC Gamer would do a nice Photoshop to tease Xbox 360 gamers and it is also hard to believe a Microsoft employee accidentally put an Xbox 360 title in between Windows games. So are we looking at the unofficial confirmation that Gears of War is coming to PC? We think so.
This is not the first time that a PC version of Gears of War has been rumored to be in the making. Back in 2005, J. Allard said (http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/8388/Gears-of-War-Is-It-Coming-to-Xbox-360-and-PC/) that Gears of War was coming to both Xbox 360 and PC and last month, ConsoleWars.de reported (http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/12042/Gears-of-War-Coming-to-Windows-Vista/) that a Swiss release scheduled list from Microsoft shows Gears of War as a Windows Vista game coming in the fourth quarter of 2007.

It's really quite a great game, hype aside. Some things could be changed, like the fact that I can't be revived while my manz can. I don't see why they couldn't have stolen that bit from Republic Commando. Not being able to trade in my pistol for another weapon blows. Marcus is a fucking bulldozer, I'm sure he can fit another rifle where the pistol goes. When I ignore the minor stupid shit aside, it's one of the most intense shooters I've played on a console. Whoever tweaked the cover system so well deserves a lot of monies.
In closing, the chainsaw kicks ass.

I played co-op with a decent guy; 3/4ths of Act 3 and all of Act 4. Co-op makes this game about 2.5x more fun, I didn't even feel the usual tediousness that comes with repeating the same areas. The only reason I stopped playing is because the guy dozed off from fatigue. He said he was playing all day.

I've completed the single player roughly four times and just went through half of it again today.
It's just so satisfying to melee/chainsaw/tag/shoot/bow/boom/etc people.
And as you said, doing so with a friend is ten times as fun.
Oddly enough, I still haven't finished it on Insane. I always get close, and then just come up short an act or two.

The RS:V cover method seems to work quite well, but I've got used to Gears. Just make sure you don't press a direction key when trying to take cover and it works fine.
In other news, I tried Raam again on hardcore yesterday and managed to kill him first time. He didn't seem to advance as fast as the previous attempts and the torque bow seemed to keep those Kryl fuckers from protecting him (like grenades). Now I'm in Act 2 on Insane and its quite hectic.

The single player is really just a full length expansion for CoD2. So if you liked that, you'll enjoy 3. It doesn't fuck with anything even though it's developed by a different studio (I'm mainly talking about level design, of course). The multiplayer is a lot of fun, though, especially since you can go on Live in split-screen. Two organized guys who know how to play can turn the tables.
