She's stopping me from buying Splinter Cell because it has people shooting each other. And her reasons are so damn ungrounded.

Isnt 90% of all games involve violence? Why only splinter cell?

Well, the only thing I have to say about that is "yo ho ho and a bottle of rum, 16 men on a deadman's chest" Argh me matey. You know what I mean.

How old RU? If sixteen, then get a job. Then buy whatever the hell you want to buy. It worked for me.

I'm only 14, but it's my own money, not my parents. My mom thinks she's protecting me from these violent games... oh, it's alright to shoot down another plane, but shoot the person themself? Oh no, dearie me, can't do that.

Didn't you say in another thread you read sci-fi and stuff? If so, I think that you are mature enough to play violent video games. I'm 22 so i think I know a thing or two about raising kids...ok I don't really but when I have one I so have a plan on making it into a little clone of myself....Uh anyways I wouldn't make an issue over splinter cell it really isn't that good. If you are going to make a ruckus go for bf1942 instead. And maybe do an essay on ww2 so they know you know your shiznit.

Sorry, I'd better elaborate. I want to buy two "violent" games, Metroid Prime and Splinter Cell. Both have a T rating. I could buy them, but then the matter would be whether I could play them. I could of course try and do it behind her back, but I'd prefer not to have to do that.

Hmmmm....dificult situation. Where does parents get such ideas anyway? When i was living with my parents i had no such problems.

well i think your mother is right, you are only 14.
i also have 2 Kids and i will never buy or let them buy a game what is not for there age.

you are very bad calling your mother "fucking stupid"

i would stop to give you any money, and i would take your PC too.

Well, I was pretty angry, and in retrospect I wouldn't have said that. But she was acting pretty stupid, and my point is they aren't "not for my age" They're rated T, meaning suitable for 13+

April 26th, 2003, 12:15 PM
Well, in my opinion, you should try not to buy any mature rated game if you're not 18... think in this way, by the time you're 18, it would be four years from now, and your rig will be so good, you can play Splinter Cell with very smooth fps with all the details!!

Odm
April 26th, 2003, 12:59 PM
Splinter Cell is rated T. Not M. Therefore, suitable for 13+, not 18+

the ratings are there for your parents; they aren't a standard. they're not there so that you can decide if you're mature enough to play them.

don't get me wrong, youth is pretty much desensitized these days (myself included), so i don't believe it'll do any harm to play these games.

all in all, she's your mom; and call her what you want, cause she owns you for another 4 years :)

If Splinter Cell is rated T, there is no point why NOLF2 is rated M then.... this rating system isn't credible at all...

sushi128
April 26th, 2003, 01:52 PM
well, maybe they take the premise and graphic detail of the violence into consideration.

How this should work, IMO, is that a parent should see for themselves just what their son's PC game is about, and not rely on some label on the box. Maybe you could get the Splinter Cell demo, and let your mom have a look? I don't think that the violence is really that much different than what you could watch most nights on TV.

BTW, Odm, I'm not trying to be critical of your mom; she's just trying to raise her son the best way she knows how.

I think Yian's right. The rating system is screwy. Why does C&C Red Alert 2 have a "T" rating, for example? Did anybody relate that game to anything having to do with reality?

Yup, one screwy rating system. The demo doesn't work on my computer though, I'm buying it for Gamecube. Their qualm is that I'd be intentionally aiming a gun at the people and shooting them. My problem is, all the other GC games on offer are crappy. Well, not all, but the ones I'm not planning to buy/own.

All I have to say about C&C:RA2 is: dolphins and squid.

I'm a parent. I have two kids. Maybe your mom thinks that if you play that game you'll want to go out and shoot people. A parent's logic can be very odd and off the wall at times. Do you know anybody who owns the game? Maybe you can borrow it and let your mom see it. It is your money, but buying it to just have to play it behind her back is not the best of ideas. Trying to keep something from parents is more work then its worth. The ratings ARE stupid if you ask me. Sometimes age doesn't matter. It depends on how mature you are. If it makes you feel any better, I would let you buy the game.

Thanks. My parents are actually pretty reasonable, and they don't think I'd go out and shoot someone after playing Splinter Cell. They just don't like the ethics of deliberately shooting someone, which sucks for me, since I like those games.

Yian
April 27th, 2003, 02:04 AM
Well, be honest, I think the fact that games letting people "shoot" the others is quite "not right...", but hey I'm a happy gamer! I enjoy bad-ass games!:D :D :D

Yes, sometimes those games are too violent for me. But most of the time I like watching the bodies hit the floor.

First of all, if you are going to inuslt you mother, write it all out.

Second I agree with you Yian but there are some freedoms in life that are undeniable to all gamers. ex: Diablo2 or WarCraft3 (for those younger than 13) I would rather get raped by rabidmonkeys than wait until I'm 18 to play Diablo2 when the game is already obselete, the servers have already been taken down and new shit is out. I dunno a balance I guess is good thing to achieve but how much so.

Third. Yeah games are violent but heck its not real. I still can't imagine that a completely sane person can play with pixels on a flate plane and turn into a voilent person and start spray blood. Red pixels are red, they are not blood...

WOW. My parents don't even know what I buy or what I have on my PC. I could have a 300 GB porn collection without them knowing. Weird that you
A) BUY your games (allthough I understand with Splinter Cell)
B) let your parents know what games you play. Am I the only one with a PC on their room?

I don't mean to put salt on the wound by saying that I CAN do these things and you can't but I think you should put your PC on your own room and put away the box of the game. I know, it's sneaky but I think Splinter Cell is worth it :D

Odm
April 27th, 2003, 11:02 AM
Ummm thanks Chimera. Unfortunately, I won't be playing it on my PC, it's too crap to play it. I'll be playing it on my Gamecube, and I it's not as easy to sneak around playing these games when they're in the family room (I can't have a TV in my room, no sockets for it) It's not a very violent game, but my parents thnk it's morally wrong.

How's your mother's opinion about the war in Irak? You might be able to use that card if she says she's pro war.

Chimera, You know how much trouble he might got into by actually asking that in order to get a game?

My parents are VERY anti-war. They're diplomats....

ehm I don't understand? Why can he get into trouble? Asking never hurt anyone. But knowing that they're anti-war I don't think you should use it. Is this war-thing really THAT sensitive with the American people? Weird, I can always say or ask anything to my parents (as long as it's not insulting.).

Please Yian, explain it to me.

OK, so you can't play that card. That's too bad. But can't you say something like: "I'm getting older and I think it's my responsibility to choose whether I want to play violent video games or not?" My parents always wanted me to mature, every parent wants that so they let me decide a lot of things when I got older. For instance when I was around 15 years old, it was my responsibility to determine a good time to go to bed, while I used to go to bed when they told me so.

Chimera, I appreciate the fact that you're trying to help, but it's not really helping. My parents aren't your typical parents...

Where do you live? On Arrakis, parents teach their children how to kill others so that thier water may belong to the sietch.
