But what is freedom? If you are a determinist, sleep easy, because you won't have to worry about it.

Oh, unless you mean democracy...that's a completely different matter...

Overpopulation is the source of all problems.

People have been the main source of limitations to freedom.
Look, its all in your point of view. A Neo-liberal will tell you the state is the main challenge to freedom because it interferes in our life (specifically the rights of the free market). A conservative will tell you that the welfare state is the main challenge because it limits your ability to spend your money on what you want (by taxation). A feminist will tell you that freedom is a relative concept because for thousands of years it applied only to men. A post-modernist will tell you that the definition of freedom is in flux; really, what is freedom? Is it freedom of thought? Is it freedom of speech? In that case should I be able to go around yelling racist slurs at people? What about the law? Laws limit freedoms. Why shouldn't I get to steal my neighbours TV? What about religion? Religion definitely limits freedom. So what if I use a condom? Why is that anyones buisness? What about atheists? Why should an atheist have to say "one nation under god" or swear by the bible in court?

ITS ALL FUCKING RELATIVE!

But if you want an easy answer that doesn't challenge you, pick on of the following:

What is the greatest challenge to freedom?

A) George Bush (aka the great satan)

B) Pinko commie leftys.

Haha, no. Actually there was this kid on another board who asked the same question, and it was an interesting thread. I thought it would be interesting to read everyone's input here. I'm too old to be writing essays.

I think Downfall is 100% correct. Our governement is literally unable to make any progress, and it's only going to hurt us in the long run. Both sides need to get over what party they represent, and begin to focus on the issues that are rotting our country from the inside.

ah yes closed are minds we have yes. In my opinion Religion also is kinda Cock-block for freedom, a big annoying cock-block.
and ALSO the fact we think only of ME, "lets fight for OUR freedom, but in the same time killing others who are "evil" thus making us not so free, because we are afraid of an attack on our freedom every day"

We as human beings rely on restraint as a necessity to govern ourselves. Thus absolute freedom is an impossibility since considering the nature of an individual complete freedom is anarchy.
But I guess this answers little to the actual question at hand. I have to agree with bob on the topic that it is all relative. Freedom for some is oppression for others. And viceversa.

Education. People are, for the most part, too fucking stupid to be free. If the US spent $1 on education for every dollar it spent on "defence" the problem would sort its self out (same thing applies to most countries).
