View Full Version : RAM problem:

For some odd reason, I only have 6.71 MB of RAM free, even when I've closed everything. How could I get more "free physical memory"? (Note: the only things I have running are my firewall and my anti-virus)

Dude just make sure virtual memory isn't disabled or anything and make sure it has plenty of space. Or just set it to automatic memory management. Another thing that would help would be buying more memory.

I have 128 MB, which is pretty low... I'm hoping to buy some more. Max is 512

winXP eats a lot of RAM. hard to run on even 256mb of RAM. what OS are you using?

ME. Everyone says ME sucks. I don't know, but I think it's better than Win95... I'll just list my system specs:
866MHz processor (I know, it sucks)
128 Mb RAM
64MB graphics card (nvidia something or other)
Windows ME
and some lovely generic items.

I'm planning to buy more RAM sometime in the future. How much would 128MB cost, and what do I have to be careful of when buying it?

i like winME. anyway, try adding the Conservativeswapfile=1 line under 386enh in your system.ini

and try those programs that free up you RAM; win9x is horrible when it comes to memory management.

Will that affect my computer in ANY negative way? I don't want to tinker with it, my parents use it too.

no, it just tells youre computer to use up all the physical memory before your swap file. it takes a LONG time before windows unloads stuff from your swap file. the stuff in your physical memory that is linked to the stuff in the swap file won't terminate (usually). if you can force windows to load most the stuff into the physical memory, you have a better chance that it'll be unloaded quicker.

if that sounds damaging, don't do it. it's just a tweak.

If you have ME, you should use at least 3Gb of ram. That will leave about 128mb free for your programs. :)

you blame winME for the horrible memory management in EVERY revision of the win9x kernal? what were u using in the days of win98....??? besides, win9x had a problem addressing RAM beyond 512mb. u needed a tweak for that :)

Yuk, I h8 OSes with the win9x kernel. I be using winXP pro (now with the NT kernel! Woot!)

Actually, I used win95.5 or whatever it was called. Of course, I only had a p2 with 198mb of ram so I was all like "Look at me, my computer sucks 'cause my wife won't let me spend any money on the pc". Then I got her the sims...well, you've probably seen my specs by now. :D

Really though it's how us married guys get stuff. Thank God they make games for chicks nowadays. I have no idea how I'd be able to spend any money on this thing if it wasn't for that. What's great is like she noticed we only had 25% space left on the HD so now I have a 120GB drive on the way over. :)

Chicks dig x-treme beach volleyball. I know it doesn't sound right but it's true.

u sure abt that.. coz atleast i know this that if i get her that game.. its gonna backfire on me.. and the SICK PERVERT remark.. ok thats stretching it but i think i might just get her.. some platformer instead like sly cooper.. and ratchet and clank etc etc..

Well, that's how my wife is at least. She likes games with dating features and collecting crap. But then again she's a mature adult and knows she'll be the one benefiting if I get a bit revved up by it.

But on the other hand, if it's for your gf and you guys aren't living together yet it might be best to buy her something cute and/or constructive like animal crossing, the sims, sim city 4, tropico, or if she's into platforming sly cooper, ratchet and/or clank, etc.

yeah she likes platformers.. not much into sims or rpg but i would get her the ps2 once we get married soon.. and then it would be time for my hardware upgrade.. muhahaha.. ok i am just bullshitting here.. i just got me a radeon and she doesnt mind that.. Too much.. but ofcourse now i gotta get a gamepad atleast so that she can play.. u know how hard it is for keyboard and mouse combos..

Cool! The true test is when you share a bank account. Then she might be like "where's the $400 I was gonna spend at saks 5th avenue today?!". :D

haha.. wishful thinking for me i guess.. i do share a bank acct.. but i dont have to hide anything from her.. thats the best part.. i will just get her a 300$ ring now.. that would please her more than a ps2.. whatcha think?!

plus my life would be at peace for a year atleast.. :D

Ironically, that is true. Men say "jewlry is most illogical" while females say "Oh that's so much better than a PS2!". It's odd.
