After finally getting my own broadband connection, ive been able to register my copy of HL2 on steam and play the game (for the first time). Considering the game is now 2-3 years old, the graphics were pretty good, and the gameplay is awsome. THe gravity gun, especially when used in the citadel is probably the best weapon in the game, followed by the crossbow. I'm really not sure which part of the game would be the best, as i thought all parts were really good, but i enjoyed the gunboat in 'waterhazard', and nova prospekt. At first, HL2 seemed really like the game devastation, set in the same era in the same sort of scenario, until the game showed its own completely unique characteristics, such as locations, the striders, the citadel's architecture and so on. The game ran really well on my new rig, i got last year, at 1280 x 1024 resolution (AMd 3500+, nvidia geforce 7600gt, 2 gig ram), but i still think there is lots more room for improvement on the graphics side for the future.

Its probably a good thing that valve incoporated steam into the installation part of the game, because really well made games don't deserved to be pirated as easily as other games, but for me it meant waiting until i got a connection to the internet that could actually connect to steam. Overall, i'm impressed with the quality of HL2 in all aspects of the game including the G-man

1. The gameplay in HL2 sucked. It was a disgrace to the franchise.
2. The need for an internet connection just to play single player is bullshit.

1. Opinion! But I thoroughly enjoyed it. 7.5-8/10
2 It doesn't require connection, buy it at retail, then no connection is needed.

I enjoyed it very much (Lehesu just doesn't enjoy video games) but yes, even the retail needs a connection. It's needed to unlock the game.

I have retail, I know it does.

The problem with Half-Life 2 is that it has a little bit of everything, and none of the concepts were fully developed. Zombie town, ant-lions, gravity gun, physics, vehicles... none of these elements work well together and none of them ever become strong enough to stand on its own.

Not to mention the horribly unsatisfying weaponry. The FPS era of requiring at least half a clip to kill a single guy should have ended long ago.

Is Ravenholm that zombie place with the fat guy? I remember it sucked.

one thing i didn't like was that the enemy got to have sniper rifles at certain points in the game and the player doesn't. I believe there weren't really enough weapons to play with. A sawn off shotgun would've been nice.

Another thing is the combines architecture, the rediculously huge citadel and giant metal walls and columns throughout the game (some of which move to try and crush you) made the game too unrealistic with science fiction.

Half life 3 should be about gordon freeman in iraq, located in fullujah or baghdad, and hunting down those weapons of mass destruction bush failed to find.

Yea, the amount of weapons is crap.
Gordan Freeman in Iraq, now thats an unfair advantage.

Well.. I guess I shouldn't be intersted either... It's been over a few years since its first release... But I think I'm addicted to it... maybe because the HL2 was the reason to get back to gaming again...

Half Life 2 kicked ass.
Half Life 2: Episode 1 kicked more ass.
Half Life 2: Episode 2 will... you get my point.

But then I liked Doom 3 and cant stop playing Fear, heh.

Doom 3 was meh, FEAR was exceptional... hands down one of the greatest FPS I have played to date. While Half Life 2 was very good, FEAR just sucked me in, had me on the edge of my seat, and actually scared the shit out of me. Doom 3, was like "boo"... "ah"... *sigh*

Doom 3 was a little scary the first few levels. Then it got so predicatable. Oh looks a soda machine, bet it is going to fall over and imp will pop out. Yup it did. Eventually you could just run around with the chainsaw and go ape shit on the imps. The fight with the cyber demon was laughably easy.

I thought FEAR was fun. Definetly better than Doom 3. It didn't really suck me in, but I had alot of fun playing thru the single player. I liked slowing stuff down and kicking a clone soldiers head off and listening to them yell OH SHIT. I liked it better than Half Life 2. I like multiplayer for HL2 better with mods like CS:S and DoD:S.

Far Cry was really the fps that I will say I got addicted too. It's non-linear open endness and amazing looking graphics just added to the hours of good shooting fun. Besides who doesn't like lame B movie acting and storyline?

Did you guys know that a sequel to Fear is already long into development but for legal reasons they cant call it Fear 2?

http://www.nameyourfear.com/ Seriously, they're still looking for names, the winner gets a trip to Monolith Studios and an in game character likeness.
Which pisses me off because its open to US residents only.

I think Crysis will be the next 'big shit', i've been following that games development since I saw the first screenshot, damn I want it bad.
That and UT3.

You weren't bored, you were terrified.

I only play HL2 with garrysmod so I can use custom scripted weapons. I don't like HL2's default weapons much, HL1's weapons are where its at.

I loved HL2 to death, especially the puzzles they put in that required the use of the physics engine.

Never beat doom 3 because it got boring, but FEAR was amazing.
