View Full Version : Revise the top ten most influential list.
ALttP
June 17th, 2007, 01:39 PM
Either revise it to actually discuss Eastern AND Western RPGs or make it only about Western RPGs, which seem to be what it is anyway with the exception of FF.
Final Fantasy inspired many Eastern RPGs and brought it into the mainstream.
Pokémon inspired many collect-athon RPGs such as Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Dual Monsters, Spectrobes, Monster Rancher, etc.
Dragon Quest inspired Final Fantasy and is generally considered one of the first console role-playing games.
So praytell, what games have even been remotely influenced by Fable or KOTOR? The way you talk about them, there's no mention of their influence on anything, just their quality.
Jwr5
June 17th, 2007, 02:38 PM
KOTOR influenced Mass Effect.
Fable influenced Fable 2.
ALttP
June 17th, 2007, 02:45 PM
...Influencing a sequel is not influencing.
If you want to talk influence outside of the actual definition, Pokémon's influenced Pokémon G/S/C, Pokémon RuSaEm, Pokémon DP, Pokémon Ranger, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, Pokémon Stadium, Pokémon Stadium 2, Pokémon Snap, etc.
Influence means that it started a new style which influenced OTHERS to follow. How does Peter's Fable influence Peter's Fable 2? It's not as if Fable started any new style which blew Peter's mind, so he was inspired to make Fable 2. He made it because the first was a million seller.
Even if you count those examples as evidence of influence, Pokémon, DQ, FF, and Wizardry have influenced as many games as KOTOR and Fable (if you combine them and then times them by 20).

Wow, great to know that the qualifier for being on this list is not being "teh kiddie" along with being a Western RPG.
Pokémon has influenced more games than Fable and KOTOR will ever influence.
If you want to make a top ten RPGs without Japanese RPGs, be my guest. But don't make a top ten most influential games and exclude three of the most well-known and influential RPGs ever created (Wizardry, Pokémon, Dragon Quest). Stop talking about your opinion of a game's quality and actually pay attention to its influence - did anyone else notice that there's no actual reason provided to say what WoW influenced? EQ influenced more than WoW - Hell, that game influenced WoW.

A sweaty ass crack is not something to be ashamed about. Wiping with a dry rag can help to alleviate symptoms, but if problems persist, please consult your physician and pray he doesn't keel over when he catches a whiff.

We discuss the adverse effects that SBS (Sweaty Ball Syndrome) has on our everyday lives, and ways we can avoid such complications. The Sweaty Ass Crack Club meets on Wednesdays. They have the same activities as us, but they have a larger budget and can afford to have Cake and Pie at every meeting.

Uninspired? I made legitimate posts, and all I've seen done by you is troll Japanese RPGs. This article is clearly about the writer(s') favorite RPGs, not how much influence they've had.
Even if we weren't even talking about Japanese RPGs, there are a lot of Western RPGs that deserve it so much more than Fable or KOTOR.

Fable and KOTOR aren't even in the top ten most influential Western RPGs list.
Your biases aside, the list is still poor coming from a Western POV.

Jesus for fuck ass ballsacks in hell. The article was an opinion. The fact that it's on a website doesn't mean it's pretending to be holy fucking scripture farted out from god's rancid mexican asshole. Just as you're a chink fanboy, the article's writer is a western fanboy. I like a legitimate videogame argument, but this is retarded. On the article being poor, I agree. But not because it doesn't have chink RPGs. They suck our united sweaty balls every Thursday. Chinks love salt, they invented soy sauce.
ALttP

Fanboy?
How in the Hell is someone who isn't calling for 90% of a top ten list to be only Japanese games, and calling for games that don't belong on it to BE on it? The difference between you and I is that you are far towards Western RPGs, while I play both and like both.
At no point did I ever propose "hey, let's not include Western RPGs". It's not even that this shitty list is an opinion and a biased Western RPG viewpoint, the writer didn't even do his own fucking research and if the only thing potentially wrong with the list is that it's biased, he wouldn't have included such shitty entries as Fable and KOTOR. Fable influenced nothing. I can think of tonnes more games that influenced more games than Fable ever could hope to influence - Bard's Tale, Eye of the Beholder, etc.
So as I've pointed out, put the "chink RPGs" aside and focus on the fact that this is a shitty list that puts focus on some nothing games when actual games that have had actual influence in the industry deserve it more - and like I said, they're also Western RPGs, so the only explanation that can be made is that the writer didn't do a lick of research or the writer wasn't thinking when he wrote the title.

ALttP
June 18th, 2007, 11:50 AM
And that's still irrelevant. Fable has no purpose being on this list. It doesn't matter whether or not these more influential RPGs are JRPGs or WRPGs, they're still more influential. Doesn't matter if it's Eye of the Beholder or Dragon Quest.

They meet on Tuesdays. I can't say much else, though. I don't really pay attention to what they do because they're a bunch of smug bastards that think their sweaty feet are more of a problem than our sweaty balls.
They aren't as bad as the eunuchs, though. A while back they tried to get us to change the name of the terrible affliction we suffer from to "Sweaty Crotch Syndrome" on account of them not having balls and being cry baby pussies that felt it was offensive to them and their lack of testicles, yet they still get a sweaty "crotch area". Fortunately, we won that battle and they eventually gave up and formed their own support group. They totally copied our list of activites, including our weekly Bowling get-to-gether at Gutterball Joes, except they go on Saturday instead of Sunday. What a bounch of douchebags.
Dark_Swordmaster

Have you stopped to ask them about it? Perhaps it's not their fault they lack balls. Perhaps they somehow got into an accident with farming equipment (or animals) or a cement mixer. I recommend, from a high school guidane counselor's perspective, that you go talk to them and see their point of view. Maybe peace isn't so far off.

And Fable was mostly a disappointment which didn't influence anything but a sequel.
Fact of the matter is that the list sucks for including Fable. Doesn't matter if it excludes JRPGs or not.
And besides that, I'm not even saying JRPGs are good. I have always preferred western RPGs and will always prefer western RPGs.

Blue Dragon was supposedly a good JRPG and Fable was influential because it simplified the RPG genre and made it more approachable to less experienced rpg gamers. Although it was simple it still had a great deal of depth. The humor of the game and the day/night cycles of the characters were influential as well.

June 18th, 2007, 02:42 PM
The sheer depth of character interaction was also influential.

If you're looking to get the list changed, there really isn't anybody here in power to do that.
