I find it incredible that if I take the fans off of auto and set them at 50% and set the clock speeds as high as CCC will let me, the card never goes over 50c (122f). It's such a sexy card.

Fermi seems to do the job, but doesn't seem as elegant as ATI's solution. At least they managed to get out a solution which was fast enough. 1 Billion more transistors means that it isn't better though. When ATI releases their refresh, Nvidia will be back on the defensive.

Here are some pictures I took with my shitty blackberry of the new case. Camera sucks but hey, it gets the point across. Guess it doesn't help that I am heavily drinking and listening to Deadmau5 whilst picturing.
This is the front, all put together. ![]() View of the top fin thing detailed. ![]() Top view with no fin. ![]() Here's the clearance. Two monitors work fine with healthy bend ![]() ![]() Side view, long as shit. Plus the window is THICK. No sound problem. ![]() No door side view. ![]() Looks like its sitting right up against it but it's a good inch and a half away. ![]() Plus I like how the fan basically blows into the intake. Siiick. Three switches for the lower fans. lo and hi. Not much of a difference in noise but the 'lo' setting really makes this thing quiet. ![]() The two fan controllers I have until I mod the case a little. A bit of a pain in the ass to remove the 'fin' but I need a 'workout' every once and a while I guess, haha!

That case's orientation is confusing the hell out of me.

Can't disagree. But, what 1 billion transistors does mean for nVidia is a certain cost-to-manufacture vs. profitability ratio which will be interesting to see if they can maintain. I'd love to know what sort of yields they're realizing currently at TSMC. And how much nVidia is making on each GPU...
It seems like the initial surge of available cards has largely dried up, at least here in the States. I was cruising NewEgg this morning, (looking for things I don't need, to buy with money I don't have), and saw that they have zero stock on the GTX470/480-series. It's hard to imagine that any other entity would be given preference to available cards over NewEgg, so it will be telling to see how long this situation exists. EVGA and nVidia are joined at the hip, so I would expect them to receive whatever is in the pipeline first, at least for North American sales. If product availability remains scarce, this is obviously not a good indicator. Likewise, I will be keen to see how this GPU fares over the months to come. I don't think it is unreasonable to say that, from a manufacturing standpoint, this design really is at the bleeding edge. Does the actual 480 vs. the allegedly proposed 512 stream processor count on the GTX 480 indicate a manufacturing concession? Or, is nVidia sitting on the "512" as a hedge against an impending ATI Autumn refresh? Either way, I want to see a good 6-12 months of usage on these jammies and see just how durable they are. I found out that EVGA's "lifetime warranty" was not quite what that would suggest a few years back, (twice), and they are permanently on my personal "do not buy" list. If you sense any anti-nVidia bias in my comments, you can filter it through the lens of those experiences. I don't believe the GPU itself was to blame, but EVGA, at least at the time, was notorious for simply implementing the nVidia reference design for the card itself. I do want to see nVidia remain competitive. ***** boardryder, please swing by the 1700 block of N. 19th street and pick up a pair of cinder blocks and GET THAT CASE OFF THE FLOOR! Three 180 mike-mike fans blowing who-knows-what into the internals of your system isn't a good thing, trust me. And, yes, I'm taking the "filters" into account. This isn't a comment on your housekeeping because I'd say the same thing even if you were living in a surgical suite. In addition, having the case sitting on a piece of carpet sort of defeats the airflow clearance those large feet on the case are supposed to provide. Floors and personal computers should always be mutually exclusive. |

Alternatively, you could modify your card BIOS and set the fan speed percentage based on the specific temperature of the card. Heaven knows where ATI pulled the fan speed settings out of.

At this point, every one is screaming "Blasphemey!" regarding using your 4400+, but, consider for a moment. You could wait until you find some game that truly tests the limit of your patience, in terms of being CPU-limited, before upgrading the balance of the system. You may well find that won't be at all immediate, which means you can wait a bit longer, and make a more informed decision.
