thoughts on life, religion, etc.

I started this thread so that users The Heart of Darkness, Doomsday and I could continue a discussion about faith and other related issues. Ideally this would remain between the three of us, at least for a while. If too many people jump in, it will become messy and loud. It always does. So let's keep things clear, civilized and to the point. (and please don't bust my balls if my english isn't perfect)

Earlier I said that I want people to tell me in their own words about the things they believe in. No fancy quotes, no references to whatever, just simple personal opinions.
What exactly drives someone ? In what does he find peace of mind ? How do his beliefs affect the world ? To me, answering these questions is more important than proving or disproving ancient texts.

Since I'm the first one here, I'll start with some ideas that make sense to me. Tell me if you disagree with anything I've written here:

1. Doubt is good. Questioning something pushes us to learn more about it. We analyze issues and make informed, constuctive decisions. It wasn't blind faith in convenient and illogical explanations that helped us evolve, but observing human behavior and the way nature works.

2. I worship life and I have never hurt anyone on purpose. I am tolerant of almost anything as long as it isn't stupid or dangerous. I manage to do all that without the aid of any deity. And while I'm being civilized without religion, others run around using it as an excuse to feed their hate and mask their insecurities.

3. I believe in doing my best in my profession. I think that one's work is the most important thing in his life. Just existing, eating and procreating doesn't make someone special. But bringing something good into the world does.

4. Follow your dreams. That's right. If you don't, you'll end up being someone else's tool and your short time on Earth will go to waste. Know that you are unique and this one chance is all you have to lead an extraordinary, inspiring life. It's worth it.

5. A great sense of humor has always been a sign of intelligence and courage. Don't take everything to heart and you won't go bonkers. There shouldn't be any taboos in comedy, so make fun of your and others' defects without mercy. In time, you'll realize how silly we all are. It's a wonderful, cleansing feeling.

6. Don't accept the things I wrote here, but don't dismiss them completely either. Don't trust anything others say, just learn to think for yourself. Keep in mind that it's often those who make nice promises, that want to take advantage of you. Don't let people tell you what to think, or you'll end up living your life through THEIR eyes.

I think this is enough for starters. Anyway, it ended up being longer than I wanted it to be.

this is a gaming site and i was happy to be a apart of it cause we all have common grounds here when any1 insults a religion or even a country just cause the followers or the leaders,decision makers do something awful! it really changes the environment around here. u r entitled to ur opinion but pls, dont insult, complain, voice against it but dont bash it. even if the egyptians did it, it was the government, blame them, not all the ppl, Blame Bush, not the majority of Americans who dont want this war and seeing there sons and daughters die for, as it has turned out, for nothing!

you previously asked me about my religious beliefs, specifically what I believe in, and here it is:

1) I believe that there is one God
2) I believe in heaven and hell

Edit: and yes I do believe in everything stated in your first post, however I disagree about the "No Taboos in comedy" part, you can only go so far till you cross the boundary of good manners. Think of a person making fun of a guy in a wheelchair, the guy in the wheelchair is hurt by the other guy's sarcasm and even though its not illegal to make fun of people it is rude.

This thread is not about being good, its about the fact that un om bun bashed muslims and we're having this discussion because I'm trying to prove to un om bun that you can't classify people according to their religion.

Some people fall back on religion as an agent for morality (and thus its necessity), but I think its primary purpose is comfort for the weak minded (which is also a valid purpose).
